Aims & Learning Outcomes

The Diploma in Network and New Media (Mandarin) (E-Learning) programme is an online course where students are taught in a virtual learning environment using Mandarin as the medium of instruction.

This course is designed to equip learners with the essential skills and knowledge for today’s fast-evolving media landscape. This course offers a dynamic blend of traditional journalism foundations and cutting-edge new media practices, introducing learners to digital communication, content creation, and media marketing. Through hands-on modules in writing, editing, multimedia production, and intelligent media strategies, learners will be set on the path to becoming a versatile and innovative media professional.

 

Learning Objectives 

This programme aims to enable students to:

  • iTo provide students with a strong foundation in both traditional journalism and new media practices.
  • iAcquire Technical and Analytical Proficiency: Equip students with essential technical skills for multimedia content creation, including video shooting and editing, multimedia graphic processing, web design, and production, while also enhancing their ability to analyze and interpret data to inform media strategies and understand public opinion.
  • iTo cultivate critical thinking and effective communication skills for diverse media platforms.
  • iTo equip students with up-to-date knowledge of media marketing, advertising, and intelligent media strategies.

Course Structure

The students are required to study nine (9) modules in the specialism of their interest. The modules range from 10  to 15 credits in equivalence, totalling 240 credits. Each credit is equal to 10 learning hours.

Admission Requirement
  1. a. Normal Entry 

  1. 1. Min age: 17 years PLUS 

  1. 2. Academic Level: 

  • Completed A-Level with 2 passes OR  
  • Completed equivalent to at least 12 years of formal education  
  1. 3. Min language requirement: 

  • Obtained at least GCE O-Level B4 in Chinese language or equivalent 

b. Alternative entry 

Mature candidate of minimum age of thirty (30) with at least eight (8 years working experience. 

Delivery and Assessment
  1. Qualified and trained educators will deliver the course 100% in a virtual learning environment. Students will learn through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning modes. Students will typically attend live-streamed online lectures/lessons where they can engage with the teacher, similar to a traditional face-to-face lesson. Most of the time, students can watch previously recorded lectures at their own leisure. The instructor will typically be available via email or text chat should the students require any clarification during the learning process. Similarly, students will communicate with one another, discussing the module materials and working on any assigned tasks.

    Students learn in a variety of ways and, therefore, should be expected to engage in different learning patterns (independent learning, group work, computer-based workshops, class presentation, essay writing, etc.)

     The teaching, learning and assessment strategy of each module has been designed to ensure that teaching methods are appropriate for achieving the learning objectives of the module.

     Assessments will be conducted via a robust online examination platform, ensuring that online examinations are systematically scheduled, performed, and evaluated with integrity. Candidate’s identity will be authenticated, and manual and/or AI proctoring will be utilised.

Duration
  1. The program may be pursued on either a full-time or part-time basis. The full-time modality spans a period of eight (8) months, with instructional sessions allocated three hours per day, five days per week, culminating in a total of 336 instructional hours. Conversely, the part-time modality extends over nine (9) months, with sessions scheduled two hours per day, five days per week, also amounting to a total of 336 instructional hours. The minimum required enrolment is 30 students.

    The maximum candidature period for a student to complete the course is 36 months.

Target Students
  1. The programme is designed primarily for the convenience of students who wish to pursue a Diploma in Network and new Media and progress on to USC’s Advanced Diploma in Network and New Media. Thereafter, students may wish to continue their studies at UK, Australian and American universities for another year or two to obtain their related Business degree.
